What is Freefall?

"FREEFALL" is a method some writers discover spontaneously but many have to (re-?) learn: the technique of writing from the larger Self, beyond reach of the ego and its censors.

As the name suggests, Freefall invokes the courage to fall without a parachute, into the words as they come, into the thoughts before they have fully formed in the mind, into unplanned structures that take shape, without
prompting, to contain them.

At first, doing Freefall with a group is invaluable. The group's spontaneous response to the writing works to free the writer from the need for self-criticism. And then the magic begins.

The moment when someone shifts into that deeper level is un-mistakable. Everyone can hear it. As a result, in Coleridge's phrase, "the wheels catch fire from their own motion", and the whole group moves to a new level of achievement. The results, in writing, are spectacular.

The Details: Monday 3rd April to Sunday 9th April 2006

This week-long writing intensive offers both beginning and experienced writers the opportunity to shift to a whole new level of capability, yet remain safe and supported. Each morning will begin with gentle Tai Chi exercise, led by Richard Farmer, to relax and release the body, centre the mind and offer the experience of FREEFALL in movement.

Every day there will be a group seminar for writing skills and 5-6 hours of writing. (Typing is required, except for in-class writing). The course numbers will be limited to 12 to enable Barbara to give individual attention.

Where is Freefall?

The workshop will take place at Poulstone Court.

Barbara Turner-Vesselago has been leading popular and highly effective FREEFALL workshops since 1982. Author/editor of 'Skeleton at Sixty' (Porcupine's Quill, 1986) and freelance editor for Penguin Books and Harcourt, Brace Jovanovich Holt, Rinehart and Winston. She is working on a novel about West Africa which has won the Toronto Arts Council's Work-in-Progress award.

She has a doctorate from Cambridge University for her work on Virginia Woolf and in 1989-90 was Visiting Professor in Canadian Studies and Creative Writing at the University of Washington.

Richard Farmer is the founder and principal teacher of the Rising Dragon Tai Chi School with many centres throughout Great Britain. One of Richard's gifts is to bring the profound but simple wisdom of the East and translate it into the western context.
